A delightful textbook in every way. Journal of English Linguistics It would be a great pity if any potential readers were put off and irritated by some of the weaknesses and lapses in the first chapters, and by the occasional strange formulations to be found elsewhere dotted in the text. Most suggestions brought up by users and reviewers have been incorporated, for instance, a family tree for Germanic has been added, Celtic influence is highlighted much more, there is more on the origin of Chancery English, and internal and external change are discussed in much greater detail.

My audience remains undergraduates and beginning graduates. The reason for this is that the author of this review feels that such comments are necessary, but that they must not detract from the laudative comments to be made further on, and with which it would be preferable to finish the review.
