I am not sure if Moravia is cracking a joke on the psychoanalysts or is he too far gone to actually start analyzing every tale with a parameter of human consciousness. It is always ruthless determination to follow his subject line to the bitter end.

Moravia charts the descent through Molteni’s eyes, through his voice and we have to decide if what he sees, what he feels is real ie. Moravia’s writing is excellent – in it there is much thought and consciousness, which though destructive in real life, is engaging. Although it was often very painful and sad to read, there was something immensely helpful on a personal level in being able to follow so astutely the descent of a relationship.
Ricardo takes two steps toward the bourgeoisie and one step toward the proletariat. It was unnerving the passiveness of Molteni and his paralysis for action in face of the seducing of his wife by a more energetic, realistic man like Battista.
As he describes her actions, they seem to carry an acute awareness of her thoughts and sentiments. If she doesn’t care, what is it all for? Some action, some misunderstanding has changed her opinion of him. There is much to support this.

Stuck in the moraviw with his mind only on one thing, Molteni’s agitation fueled by the blistering heat leads him to question his own nature and deepest fears. The prose is so perfect, exact, clear covering such a gamut of emotions and thoughts. The funny thing is that as a reader you clearly see the reason behind this contempt – but he Contempt was one of my first adult reading experience.
He meets a producer who is his promise to a better future, but when the producer begins to make subtle and and then overt advances towards his wife, he is caught in doubt about how he must react. Penelope in her turn does not accept any dwsprecio on account of her pride and loyalty not because she is head over heels with her long gone spouse. Even after realizing this, she is willing to continue aberto with him as wife and lover.
So begins the slow descent from love into despisement.
