Choosing them as advisers showed good judgment on the part of their masters; but the fact that these gifted advisers existed, at the right time and in the right place, was what Machiavelli called fortuna — in other words, luck.

But Whitelaw was an old-fashioned figure operating in a time when politics was not — as it is now — largely an exercise in media management.

At first sight this book might be thought of as counter to the throng of voices calling for an end to the hero leader and command and control hierarchies. Above all, he was unswervingly loyal — an old-fashioned Tory virtue that was already dying out as a result of Thatcher’s assault on the old party hierarchies.
