This is very unusual and made it a very interesting book. Asaro brings the immediate conflict to a conclusion, the groundwork for a sequel is already in place. Asaroo 19, Minni Mouse rated it it was ok Shelves: At least there was nothing written about a quivering love pudding, which, yes, was in a real published book.
And the way she learns about her powers was really fun. May 18, Kharm rated it liked it. She doesn’t need to find herself; she’s already done that through a safe, happy and secure childhood. Feb 08, Annie rated it liked it Ccatherine For Princess Melody Dawnfield, being the daughter of the current king of Harsdown means more than looking pretty and watching men vie for her hand in marriage. The king of Aronsdale exiled Varquelle and made his cousin, Muller Dawnfield, the new king.
Likewise, those without prior exposure to the world of Aronsdale may find the literalist names Dancer, Chime, Cobalt, and so forth a bit off-putting, at first. This is a fantasy novel and it includes an invading army and a stand against c,iffs, complete with cavalry, swords and a mage. It’s not a complete love story, though that does play a big part in it and it isn’t sickeningly romance-novel-ish.
For Cobalt, whose drive to conquer is as deep as his fear of the violent streak he’s inherited from his grandsire, Mel’s grace, humor, beauty and strength brings joy. The first, Diamond Star, is the soundtrack for her novel of the same name, performed with the rock band, Point Valid.
It’s an enjoyable book to escape into, with just enough fluff and emotion to make it interesting instead of overbearing. I would have liked to learn more about the history of this complex world. Sometimes the behavior of the characters seems calculated to create drama, rather than springing naturally tne their backgrounds.
Mel Dawnfield is a strong character, who knows who she is and isn’t swayed by the mind games played by the people around her. Much like The Charmed SphereI found it difficult to put this book down.
Right dose of magic, romance, and conquest. Twists, turns, and intrigue.

Mostly, though, she wants us to forgive him thw of his painful past. Mar 31, Jarizza rated it liked it. The book has a somewhat shallow feel. This review is for the audible version: But I do have to say that Stonebreaker and Varqelle were so much more fleshed out.
Aug 13, Jessi rated it really liked it. I probably won’t seek out the rest of the series, but Cafherine read them if they fell into my lap. But he is bent upon a career of warfare, and nothing she says can change his mind.
Melody was so real to me especially. He longs for the approval of his father. Mel is a likeable enough lead who is trapped into marrying Cobalt, the Midnight Prince, son of the would-be conqueror from the first book. Cobalt’s mother is an intriguing and strong character too, and I would have liked to learn more about her. Apr 02, RogueHireling rated it it was catherinr. A tried and true formula of a haunted hero and a warm-hearted heroine, combined with the magic of a kingdom you’ll want to visit again and again, make this book a true winner.
This whole series just lacks art and style in its delivery. They don’t have some magically or divinely given right of conquest, nor is there a logical or funadmentally righteous reason for the invasion.
Sep 16, Jean rated it liked it Shelves: Feb cliffss, Lindsey rated it liked it Shelves: My main criticism is that a major twist, on which a huge chunk of the plot was based, was foreshadowed far too early and felt so obvious to me that it drained a lot of suspense and made me frustrated with the characters.
Once all the pieces were set in place though, the plot didn’t just speed up, it took off. I can’t wait caatherine read the third!

tbe Mel is better — too much better. Aug 12, Bonnie O’malley rated it really liked it. Catherine Asaro is a talented and highly respected author. Well paced, the story thankfully stands alone – I picked it up at a used book sale without knowing that it was the second in a series.
