I’ll be honest, I didn’t solve most calcuulus the problems that was not my intent Thojpson a software developer and have had my interests in Mathematics for quite some time now. I myself learned calculus in much the same way as it is presented in this book, only a century later.
It also helps with the countless examples that he gives and works out to show you how each problem is done.

It’s certainly light on rigor, but for an introductory primer,that’s not such a terrible thing. Of the three new chapters he wrote, only the one about functions seems useful. This book definitely makes calculus easy, by presenting it with simple enough concepts that are then backed up by the mathematics needed to understand them. Please enter the letters displayed. The style is conversational, even breezy. So highly recommended to a bright high-schooler or baffled undergrad, ideally to be followed by A Primer of Infinitesimal Analysis eady, if you can convince people that you don’t need the standard analysis curriculum. The downside to the free book is missing out eaasy Martin Gardner’s commentary and notes. Yes, he modernized the terminology and that’s somewhat useful, but it comes at the price of new typos compared to the edition.

A must have for high school students and parents or teachers who wish to teach children calculus. Integration is one of those skills that goes to rust quickly if you don’t use it.
I guess it’s understandable that Gardner wanted to do more than just change the wording given that his name is all over the cover, but he has not improved the book as far as I am concerned. May 14, Logan Kennedy rated it it was amazing. Silvanus Thompson did an amazing job with explaining a possibly complicated subject with great detail and made each point crystal clear. However, if you want an exhaustive reference book or a textbook suitable for college level engineering or mathematics, there are better books out there because this book lacks rigour and does not dive into deeper, more advanced topics and applications of calculus.
It turned out to not be at all what I’m looking for mace I am rating it 5 stars! Calculus is first introduced with integrals, to first teach infinitesimals and why they are interesting. Nevertheless the edition I read, which incidentally I downloaded for nothing from the Internet Archive because it’s out of copyright, was very readable and it’s antiquated style only served to enhance my enjoyment.
Martin Gardner has updated and revised the latest edition. It can be freely accessed on Project Gutenberg. This is ONLY because the original is so good.
The sections by Mr Gardner are good but not as lucid as those of the original. When I first found this book in calculua mid’s, I thought at first that it was one of those “made easy” trend books I had been seeing so much of. Feb 01, Maxwell Pollack rated it really liked it.
