Fermat’s Last Theorem by Simon Singh – book review
So if it was really the limitations of the margin and not of Fermat that inhibited publication… what was Fermat’s proof?
Being a scientist of long standing and loving all aspects of science and maths, Fermat’s Last Theorem in itself was a wonderful mystery, what I would give to see Fermat’s note book with a note in the margin about cubic numbers as opposed to squares. It is only open to those 40 years old or younger, so it is just about the only prize that eluded Andrew Wiles. Method of infinite descent. Nonetheless, this book is very interesting and well written, and shows you how many things that appear to be simple and almost intuitive can be incredibly complex that’s what’s so beautiful about math.
Fermat’s Enigma: The Epic Quest to Solve the World’s Greatest Mathematical Problem by Simon Singh
It has the classic ingredients that Hollywood would recognise. Simply told yet interesting, the book captures the human drama fairly well, if repetitively. Chintia Maharani rated it it was ok Apr 09, Aug 17, Gorana rated it really liked it Shelves: It is clear, not too jargon-heavy but contains enough mathematical “meat” to seem satisfying.
I can’t imagine where Wiles would be without Frey. Rhett rated it it was ok Feb 29, Perelman laast exactly 40, but he decide to spurn the prize, even after Sir John Sihgh, President of the International Mathematical Union, flew to St Petersburg and spent 10 hours trying to persuade him to accept.
Yesterday I finished reading Fermat’s Last Theorem. The Ferat Books of There is great craftsmanship in Singh’s account, and an unresolved question at the heart of this story.
This was a linkage between two far-flung branches of mathematics that seemed to be totally unrelated. Iako je postojao propust u Freyevom postupku, Ribet je Or did he make an error in his proof?
Except that the mathematician jots down that he has found this proof, but not what the proof is. I live with a mathematician now – so had a go at this book. Fermat’s Last Theorem by Simon Singh.
Want to Read saving…. Juerg rated it it was ok Mar 30, The note, scribbled in Singu, simply states: And even though Wiles deserves all the fame and recognition he can get for his persistence and determination, it’s nice to see all the other great mathematicians who greatly contributed being mentioned.
He solved the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture which was a part of the logic behind solving Fermat’s Last Theorem. As you can see, the conjecture is quite easy to understand, ssimon yet, believe it or not, it was so remarkably difficult to prove that it took over years to accomplish!
For over years, proving Fermat’s Last Theorem was the most notorious unsolved mathematical problem, a puzzle whose basics most children could grasp but whose solution eluded the greatest minds in the world. Other books in this series. A very nice read detailing the incredible journey behind the solution of this theorem.
Singh is successful in seizing reader’s undivided attention when he recounts the moment when the seed of this curiosity was sown in 10yr. That may be a disappointment to some, but it’s not at all unreasonable in my opinion.

Too many digressions, too many equations, I thought the book padded for length, though some of its stories wee highly entertaining.
