The script used to write Dhivehi is called Thaana and is written from right to left. It is a relatively simple script with features of an alphabet as well. This official Latin script Maldivian Latin made indiscriminate use of “h”s for non-aspirated sounds, inconsistent with the clear phonetic rules of Indic languages. This means that Thaana is one of the few alphabets not derived graphically from the original Semitic alphabet — unless the Indic numerals were see Brahmi numerals. Maldivian writing systems
Present day members of Maldivian cultural institutions are aware of the lacunae in Bell’s research and of Bodufenvalhuge Sidi’s valuable contribution to mend matters, but little has been done to correct those inaccuracies. Latin was official only during a very brief period of the Islands’ history.
Apparently, the Dhivehi script was abandoned in other parts of the Maldives in favour of the modern Thaana script about years earlier, perhaps at the beginning of the 18th century. Even though long before that time Maldivian Buddhist monks had been writing and reading manuscripts in their language, older documents have not yet been discovered yet.
