Culri 07, April rated it liked it Shelves: The Deryni are a race of humans who can use magic. The novel is set in the land of Gwyneddone of the fictional Eleven Kingdoms. But more than ever I grow tired of a men’s world full of male characters where the women may as well not exist.
I’m tempted to continue on through the series now, chronologically, since I’ve never read the most recent trilogy in the series. I have to say that I am not necessarily morally on board with the main character, Camber, as he has some pretty high handed ideals when it comes to how to deal with humans.

All in all an enjoyable story, and am looking forward to reading the rest in this series and the rest of the Deryni books. This was good, if a bit short.
I loved this when I read it many moons ago early 80s at the culsi –so I’m giving it four stars based on foggy memories of that love. Refresh and try again. Each step of the way in the rebellion that ensues we are warned that what is started with integrity can become corrupt.
Coel continually sows mistrust between Imre and Cathan, and eventually succeeds in framing Cathan for the murder of another Deryni lord. I recall culvi sorry there wasn’t more about magic, but still – Camber of Culdi! Others have described the plot. I had forgotten many cambet the plot elements. I had never heard of Katherine Kurtz, until about a month ago. I love this series and it may well be my all-time favorite. I loved Katherine Kurtz’ Deryni books when I first read them back in the seventies.
