The food issue of the New Yorker had a profile of Arabewque Roden, which led me to head to go out and get a library card.
In my first book I put recipes from the various countries of the Middle East and North Africa together partly because this reflected my world c,audia Egypt, which at the time was a mixed community of people from around those regions.
Ours is a country built on immigration and almost all our favorite foods, from falafel and hummus to hot dogs and pizza, were brought over by immigrants.
Arabesque: A Taste of Morocco, Turkey, and Lebanon
Waves of people leaving Egypt and passing through London came to see us on their way to new homelands. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Made only a few recipes. While every Middle Eastern country has had its share of invasion and imperial powers, nowhere has seen as many conquerors as Lebanon, a history which is reflected in Lebanon’s cosmopolitan and multifarious cuisine.

Photos give a fast idea of ingredients and also presentation, it’s a helpful visual. I have very mixed feelings about this rosen. Get the hard copy! Now, in her enchanting new book, Arabesqueshe revisits the three countries with the most exciting cuisines today—Morocco, Turkey, and Lebanon.
It is impossible for me to give a favorite recipe as I love many. From Lebanon, a cuisine of great diversity: A subtle and comprehensive introduction to Middle Eastern food, it offers a different but equally enlightening angle on a part of claudix world that most Americans think of only in terms of politics.
We are experiencing technical difficulties. Unequivocally one of the best recipe books I have used.
Starting as a painter she was drawn to the subject of food partly through a desire to evoke a lost heritage – one of the pleasures of a happy life in Egypt. I agree with earlier posters who love the hardcover edition. And not only that, but Ms Rodens conversational style here can get a bit annoying if you are one of those people I have very mixed feelings about this book. Roden goes on to describe the many ways that Middle Eastern immigrants, especially clauvia Lebanese, who “are famously great immigrants,” have influenced Western food.
Recipes – The Happy Foodie
For those into Lebanese or Turkish food — this book is an essential reference. Her method for making couscous results in the fluffiest, tastiest couscous ever.
I wish this had more pictures that would communicate how awesome these dishes are. How did you originally become so involved with the art of cooking? But when asked how he suggested cooking it, the factory owner demurred.
There’s a fair number of fairly simple regional recipes in this book, some of them as noted in the text keep well so the are good singles fare. Roden is claudis a cultural anthropologist who deploys recipes as artefacts.

Claudia Roden knows this part of the world so intimately that we delight in being in xlaudia good hands as she translates the subtle play of flavors and simple cooking techniques to our own home kitchens. This failing is made up for in this book. Shish kebabs and hummus don’t generate headlines like cluster bombs and suicide attacks do, but food occupies a vaunted position in every Middle Eastern country from Morocco to Iran.
Turkish food is my favourite cuisine – I first visited Turkey claudix and found it difficult to persuade people that it was better than Greek food – then popular because of travel and migration to Australia.

There are similarities in the recipes of these countries but each has it’s own version of the various dishes and they can be significantly different. I know that it is probably directed to westerns and not middle easterns, but there is no real difference between that and a local cookbook.
